Elizabeth Adlam - Helena Maria Griffin's mother

Elizabeth Sefton was the daughter of Mr. John  and Elizabeth Sefton, of Ulster, Ireland, She was born 20 Mar 1853 in Eire, Antrim, Ireland, and arrived on the "Caduceus" on 25th March, 1865. Elizabeth was employed as a governess and took care of Harry Atkinson's young children, (later Sir Harry Atkinson, Premier of NZ) at Hurworth cottage, near New Plymouth. Elizabeth slept upstairs in his house as she later talked about how she used to look out the windows up there and see the terrible bush fires that blazed as the land was being cleared.

She married GEORGE ALFRED ADLAM 15 Jun 1869 in St Marys Anglican Church, New Plymouth, the  son of NATHANIEL ADLAM ELIZABETH BULLOCK. He was born 15 Apr 1842 in Westbury, Wiltshire, England and arrived at  Auckland with the 43rd Regiment  on the Lady Jocelyn in 1863. George fought in the New Zealand Wars, and after his discharge he turned to farming and later he ran a store at Pungarehu. He died 30 Jun 1930 in 61 Leach St., New Plymouth.  Elizabeth died 27 Oct 1943 in 61 Leach St., New Plymouth. They are buried in the Oakura Cemetery.

Oakura Cemetery - Large concrete plot - In loving memory of George Alfred, beloved husband of Elizabeth Adlam, died 30 June 1930 aged 89 years - His end was peace. Elizabeth, wife of the above d. 27 Oct 1943 aged 90 years also Ruth Mary d 18 June 1893 aged 2 years

Elizabeth and George Adlam had 17 children - eight sons and five daughters.

iii. ERNEST ALBERT ADLAM, b. 05 Jun 1873, Takuru, New Plymouth; m. JESSIE PRESTON, Abt. 1905, New Plymouth; b. 22 Jul 1884.

iv. HELENA MARIA ADLAM, b. 01 Jul 1874, Oakura, Taranaki, New Zealand; d. 21 May 1963, Hawera, Taranaki; m. ARTHUR GRIFFIN, 06 Jul 1896, St Marys , New Plymouth, Taranaki; b. 16 May 1872, 22 Perservance St. Bermondsey, St James, Surrey; d. 17 Sep 1956, Ngahuru Home, Hospital, Hawera, Taranaki.

v. WILLIAM HARRY ADLAM, b. 21 Feb 1876; d. 17 Aug 1949, New Plymouth; m. LILY WOOD, 1902, Registry Office, New Plymouth; b. 18 May 1881; d. 11 Mar 1943, New Plymouth.Lily and William Adlam bought Hurworth 7th February 1920. The property consisted of 178 acres of partly cleared dairy land. The cows were all milked by hand until about 1832. William worked hard clearing the land, stumping and burning to clear the bush. To get provisions they went by horse and gig to town

vii. ARTHUR EDWARD ADLAM was born 06 Jul 1879 at New Plymouth. He married MAY ERICSON. She was born 05 May 1884.

viii. FREDERICK GEORGE* ADLAM, b. 11 Feb 1882; d. 10 Sep 1974, New Plymouth; m. (1) OLIVE KATHLEEN; m. (2) MARY JANE SMITH, 21 Jul 1909, Kaponga; b. Abt. 1890, Riverlea; d. 27 Dec 1973, Wanganui.

viii. FREDERICK GEORGE* ADLAM, b. 11 Feb 1882; d. 10 Sep 1974, New Plymouth; m. (1) OLIVE KATHLEEN; m. (2) MARY JANE SMITH, 21 Jul 1909, Kaponga; b. Abt. 1890, Riverlea; d. 27 Dec 1973, Wanganui.
