Alfred, was apprenticed to a jeweller in Auckland. NOK - George Barnard. He was turned down for the Army in 1914 on health grounds. He enlisted about 1915/16 under the name George Gordon, Orchardist.  He served in France with the NZ Rifle Brigade -  badly gassed twice
