COLIN McDONALD was son of Kenneth McDonald and Anne Macdonald, and was born 13 Feb 1836 at Lochbloom, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland.
 
Ten years after his mother Ann's death, Colin left Ross Shire on 4th March 1863 for New Zealand on the 1082 ton vessel "Metropolis" from London and arrived at Lyttleton 16 Jun 1863.  On ships list his occupation is recorded as Farm labourer and on a 2nd Single Men's list,  as Shepherd.
 
The McDonald Bible confirms Colin married Robina McLeod on the 20th March 1867 at Christchurch at Cossock Cottage, St Asaphh St., Christchurch by the Rev. Geo. Grant to Robina McLeod of Invergordon, Scotland
 
They lived at Alfred Forest, Ashburton area, and here, their son Kenny James McDonald was born on Jan 5th 1869

Robina McLeod of Rossshire left London Aug 7 1866 on the sailing ship BlueJacket" ; occ:  Domestic Servant and after a voyage of 83days, arrived on 14 Oct 1866 at Lyttleton

 

Colin McDonald mar: 20 Mar 1867 by Rev Geo Grant  at Corsock Cottage, St Asaph St, Christchurch to ROBINA MCLEOD (b: 1835 in Invergordon, Inverness, Scotland. )

Their son KENNETH (KENNY) JAMES McDONALD was b. 05 Jan 1869 at Ashburton, Canterbury. Colin died 18th Jun 1871 aged 34Y 

ROBINA McDONALD, now alone with a dependant young son Kenny accepted the position of housekeeper to WILLIAM PREBBLE He had lost his wife in 1872 and the younger members of his 6 children were still of school age.

Robina and William married on 1st Jan 1875 but just 8 yrs later, she died on 04 May 1883 in Prebbleton, Christchurch  aged 48Y and was bur: 7th May 1883 at Addington Cemetery, Block 0, Plot 141B.
Her widowed husband William Prebble,  left the district after his wife's death in 1883 despite being an original settler of Prebbleton
Generation No. 2: KENNETH (birth registered as KENNY) JAMES McDONALD  Residence Palmer Road, Kaponga;  his occ; farmer - on 24th Oct 1900 at Eltham, Taranaki,  mar: ANNIE PERRY daughter of  William George and Hannah Perry. Their son Colin William McDonald was b: 29 Sep 1901 at Eltham and was 18 Mths old  when his father died.
