Timaru Herald, 23 May 1917: The friends and neighbours of Mr and Mrs Oswald Bartrum, "PukeTohu," Raincliff, paid them a surprise visit on Friday night to wish God speed to Mr Oswald Bartrum, who has enlisted, and leaves for Trentham this week. After a pleasant evening interspersed with songs and recitations had been spent Mr Buckley, on behalf of those present, handed Mr Bartrum a radium wristlet watch, as a small token of the esteem in which he was held. He emphasised the fine spirit of Mr Bartrum, a Second Division man, in volunteering, and the self sacrifice of Mrs Bartrum in allowing him to go. He spoke of his many good qualities as a neighbour, and said if he brought the same energy to bear on military matters as he did on farming, he would make a fine soldier. These remarks having been endorsed iiy Messrs Wareing, Geddes, Gudex and Mr Bartrum suitably replied. He said that though he had been in a position to volunteer he did not like the distinction between a. conscriptionist and the former, as the. latter was more often than not probably deterred business obligations. "When he looked at their gift in far distant lands, he would be reminded of the friends of his youth and manhood." Mr Buckley then called for three cheers for their host and hostess, and three more for Private Cyril Bartrum, a brother who is "Somewhere in France." The singing of the National Anthem brought a successful little function to a close.

v. GEOFFREY OSWALD BARTRUM, b. 1923; d. 03 Aug 1940, Wanganui Hospital.

New Zealand Herald, 12 Aug 1940 DEATH OF SCHOOLBOY A verdict that Geoffrey Oswald Bartrum, aged 17 years, died in the Wanganui Hospital on August 3, the cause of death being injuries accidentally suffered while exercising in the gymnasium of the New Plymouth Boys High School on October 14, 1939, was returned by the coroner. A statement by D. Caldwell, a boarder at the New Plymouth High School, was read. He stated that Bartrum in the school gymnasium was practising a movement on the horizontal bar, called the "flyway" -when he fell. His head struck the mat and he appeared to slide forward two or three feet while still on his neck. The accident was probably caused by Bartrum's hands slipping off the bar a part of a second before they should have done. Dr. H. L. Widdowson, medical superintendent of the Wanganui Hospital said that Bartrum was transferred to Wanganui from New Plymouth on Dec 8, 1939. He was suffering from a fracture dislocation of the seventh cervical vertebra. He suffered total paralysis of the legs and trunk as high as the second rib on each side. He gradually declined and died on August 3 last.

New Zealand Herald, 7 Aug 1940 LONG SUFFERING Injured when he fell from apparatus in the New Plymouth Boys' High School gynmasium nearly a year ago, Geoffrey Oswald Bartrum, aged 17, has died in the Wanganui Hospital. Bartrum suffered a broken neck in the accident, but it was hoped that he would recover. He remained in the New Plymouth Hospital for weeks and was removed to Wanganui on Dec 8, special care being taken by the Railway Department and the ambulances so that the injured youth would suffer no setback. The youth's condition became worse last week, and he did not recognise his mother when she went to see him. He had been an exemplary patient in the Wanganui Hospital, and his cheerfulness made him very popular with the nurses and patients. On Wednesday last he was visited by Earl McCready, the wrestler, whose career he closely followed. He was the second son of Mrs. Bartrum and the late Mr. O. Bartrum, Bell Street, and was a brilliant student.
