The family immigrated on the Huntress and Jim attended the Epworth private school with sisters Ann, Sarah and Elizabeth. He worked on his father's Waitohi farm and married 22 Jun 1882 to Alice Bishop of Winchester.

When his father William died, James inherited "Ladymoor" farm, now smaller as William had sold off a piece. Because of a descrepancy in the will, James had to pay each member of the family and downhearted, James sold two years later to K J King the 185 acres for 3738 on 1/7/1911.

He and Alice and family moved south to Milton where speculation in a venture went sour and again the family moved first to Bankside near Ashburton, then to Hampden and then to Rakaia where he settled down farming crops of wheat, oats and barley and stayed there until his death in 1946.
