Thomas Wadsworth built the Orari Accommodation House and Hotel and he also ran the ferry that crossed the Tekapo River
Charles Bishop followed his father-in-law Thomas Wadsworth into the licensed trade in Orari, and applied for a publican's Licence. The annual licensing meeting at Timaru for the year ended June 1868 granted one to C Bishop at Waihi Crossing. This crossing was where the State Highway met the road west to Geraldine.
The construction of the Railway and railway bridges over the Canterbury rivers reduced the need for ferries and public houses and within 5 years, Charles took up land and became a freeholder with land at Winchester. It was customary at that time for the high country run holders to call tenders for land clearance, grass sowing, shearing and harvesting. Charles set up as a contractor and carter so that he could organise such tasks and carry the produce from beyond Geraldine.
By this time he and Mary Anne had three daughters and one son. A further son died early in 1872 and following the birth of yet another son, Mary Anne died of Phthisis aged 30 years.
