      Cook.
A "green fingered" Scotsman, Robert (Bob) Stewart Scott,
brought blooming beauty to Timaru City for 23 years. He was born in Scotland and came to
New Zealand with his family, as a child, celebrating his 10th birthday
while on ship. The family settled in Palmerston North where Mr Scott
attended the Terrace End School and Palmerston North Technical College. He
worked as an apprentice sheet metal worker for five years, before joining
Harrison's Nurseries for several years. In the early 1940's Mr Scott
moved to the Palmerston North City Council Reserves department and was
responsible for developing parks, gardens and nurseries. While there, he
developed a relationship with Massey University and gave occasional
lectures and demonstrations on plants. In 1956, Mr Scott was appointed
superintendent of reserves at the Timaru City Council and he remained in
that position until he retired in 1979. Mr Scott was renowned for his
outstanding displays of flowers and bedding plants. He developed street
planting and was involved in the many developments at Caroline Bay. He
celebrated 65 years of marriage with his wife, Mary Elizabeth Davie of
Pleasant Point, who died in 1987. His daughter Dorothy recalled " He
was immaculate in everything, very pedantic - a very fine gentleman. A
good father, we had a lot of respect for him - ever a fair and humble
man". His family had a wonderful playground in the Timaru Botanic
Gardens where the family lived in the big brick house on the corner of
King and Queen Street. He was a great Robbie Burns fan and fittingly a
statue to the Scots bard stood outside his former home in the Timaru
gardens. In later life, he began to miss his homeland. In 1991 Friends
of the Gardens was formed and Mr. Scott was asked to be its patron and
fond recollections are held of this immaculately presented gentleman,
always in collar and tie and always willing to give advice and cuttings.
A teacher at Timaru College, Miss Street recalled her first encounter
with Mr Scott was when flowers were required for prize giving. He rang and
said he had delphiniums. Delighted, she drove in her Morris minor and
found he had sent men with scythes where a huge paddock of these flowers
were at the bottom of the nursery and recalls the journey back with a
small car stacked with the tall flowers. Bob Scott was a judge for the
Hurley Shield competitions for schools for many years and is remembered as
a fair and practical man, widely respected and always available for
advice. Mr Scott was an elder at Trinity Presbyterian Church, a
national committee member of the New Zealand Institute of Parks and
Reserves, a member of the Masonic Lodge and a Timaru South Rotarian. He
was a patron of the Morgan's Road Community Sports Trust, the South
Canterbury Horticultural Society, the South Canterbury Seafarers Welfare
Association and the Friends of the Gardens Committee. Their children
