Frederick Peter and Ellen Young

FREDERICK PETER PELVIN was born 21st Jun 1870 in Timaru. He was admitted to Clarmont school 16th July 1878, and he passed Std 3 in Sept. 1881.
His father Richard moved his family to the Waimate area  and Fred became a first day pupil at the Ikawai School when it opened 1882.

Fred was a mill owner at Waitaki and with his brother Charles, they operated their threshing mills in the Waikakihi distrist from the Waiho River Boundary to the Wairaki and as far as Stonewall. They also did chaff cutting and hauled both grain and wool to the railway at Glenavy and fred farmed at the Waitaki settlement. (Photo of Fred and Charles with a Fowler traction engine)

In mid-January 1899, Fred was driving his traction engine to Waimate for repairs with his brother Charles. He ran short of water in the Gorge and pulled up beside a waterhole to fill the boiler. The hose was too short to reach the water from their position, and on trying to get nearer, the engine ran over the bank and rolled twice into the hole. Fred hung on and ended up underneath in about six feet of water. Luckily he was not stunned, and managed to crawl out backwards, and his brother, who had been able to jump off, pulled him out on the bank. Mr S. J. Adams was passing at the time, and drove the two men to town when it was found that no serious injury had been done. The engine was considerably damaged. The cause of the mishap was found to be the breaking of the steering gear and vigorous attempts were needed to get it out of the hole.
