Death at Kaipara Harbour, Northland, New Zealand
Fatal Boat Accident;
Auckland, January 13 - A boating accident at Hoteo, Kaipara harbour, on
Saturday claimed the lives of ten people and only one survived after
swimming 3 miles to shore to sound the alarm. The boating fatality
occurred when returning from fishing at Small Island, and capsized
near the entrance of the Hoteo river. Among those who drowned
was Hart Beswarick - he was visiting the area looking for work.
THE KAIPARA BOATING FATALITY. This afternoon Constable
Thompson telegraphed from Port Albert to Inspector Hickson that the boat
which contained the pleasure party was found on Wednesday last, and that
the body of Mr Beswarick, of Oamaru, was found in the channel, two miles
from Motureno Island. The settlers showed their sympathy by attending the
funerals in large numbers.
Poverty Bay Herald,
20 January 1896: Mr Beswarick, the Oamaru resident drowned in the Kaipara
fatality, only recently went up to the Auckland gum diggings to try to
earn a livelihood for his wife and children, who are now left in almost
destitute circumstances. Beswarick was about to return to Oamaru, having
offers of harvesting work.
